Is Avis Budget Group owned by Cendant Corporation?

  • Avis and Budget were owned by Cendant Corporation until 2006, when Cendant separated into four new companies, each a “pure play” within their industries. Two of these companies, Realogy and Wyndham Worldwide were spun off as independent publicly-traded companies in July of 2006. A third company, Travelport, was sold in August of 2006 to an affiliate of The Blackstone Group. Following the completion of the Travelport sale, Avis Budget Group remained as the sole business unit of Cendant Corporation. In September of 2006, Cendant Corporation changed its name to Avis Budget Group and its stock began trading under Avis Budget Group on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: CAR).

What is Avis Budget Group doing with respect to the environment?

  • Avis Budget Group is committed to managing the environmental aspects of our business with transparency and in accordance with established international standards, to be sensitive to the needs of the environment, and to measure and manage how our business affects the environment.


    Out of a total fleet of more than 375,000 Avis and Budget vehicles in the 2008 model year, about half have a fuel efficiency rating of 30 miles per gallon or better (highway). One-fourth of our fleet (approximately 100,000 vehicles) is rated at 32 miles per gallon (highway) or better. 63% of the vehicles in our fleet meet the standards for US EPA SmartWay Certification.


    Avis and Budget also now offers 2,500 gas/electric hybrid cars for rent in compact (Toyota Prius - 1,500), full-size (Nissan Altima - 500) and small SUV (Ford Escape - 500) car classes. The Altima Hybrid offers fuel economy estimated at 42 miles per gallon (city)/36 miles per gallon (highway) and an "Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle" rating. The Toyota Prius features an EPA-estimated combined city/highway 55 miles per gallon and also carries an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle rating. The Ford Escape features an EPA-estimated 34 miles per gallon (city)/30 mpg (highway). All three can be reserved by specific make and model.


    The Nissan Altima and Ford Escape hybrids are available at Avis and Budget locations throughout California. The Toyota Prius is available at locations in California, Portland, Ore., Seattle, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New York City, Florida and Philadelphia.


    Avis and Budget also offer flex fuel cars for rent for those seeking to minimize environmental impact through use of E-85 ethanol fuel, which is sold at gas stations primarily in the Midwestern U.S. E85 ethanol, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Studies show that on a per-gallon basis, corn ethanol reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 18% to 29%.


    Avis Budget Group has begun the process of creating a formal Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with ISO 14001 international standards. This will enable us to quantify the various environmental aspects of our business operations, and to manage these aspects, reducing our impact when and where necessary. This plan is designed to go well beyond just the so-called "greenhouse gas" emissions of our vehicles, though that will be part of our EMS. This will ensure that we are being responsible with respect to water, energy, noise, use of natural resources, landfill contribution and other areas in which we interact with the environment.


    All of the car washes installed at Avis and Budget facilities recycle and reuse at least 80 percent of their wastewater. Used motor oil, oil filters, parts and brake cleaner fluids are collected by Avis / Budget vendors and recycled at licensed facilities.


    Avis and Budget offer more vehicles equipped for electronic toll collection in more cities than any other rental car company. According to published research, paying for tolls electronically reduces hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions by 40-63%, and reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides by 16%.
